The first step to treatment is to arrive at a correct diagnosis by speaking to the patient (history), conducting a detailed physical examination and requesting appropriate tests (investigation).<\/p>\n

Following diagnosis, various treatment options can then be recommended depending on the severity of the condition.<\/p>\n

  1. MEDICATION and ACTIVITY MODIFICATION<\/strong>. – This is usually the first option and involves various drugs and advice on weight loss and activity modification<\/li>\n
  2. PHYSIOTHERAPY<\/strong>– This aims at improving muscle strength and reducing pain<\/li>\n
  3. INTRA ARTICULAR INJECTIONS<\/strong>– Injections like hyaluronic acid or depot medriol is injected into the joint usually under ultrasound guidance. The current trend is to use the body\u2019s own cells in a bid to repair damaged tissue in the joint (Regenerative medicine). This usually involves use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) or bone marrow aspirate (stem cells).<\/li>\n
  4. ARTHROSCOPY (KEY HOLE SURGERY)<\/strong> – This involves using a special telescope to look into the joint. Damaged components are then treated through another small opening in the joint. The patient goes home the same day after the procedure.<\/li>\n
  5. OSTEOTOMY<\/strong>\u2014Sometimes the shape of the limb may need to be corrected to help in reducing pressure on one side of the joint.<\/li>\n
  6. JOINT REPLACEMENT<\/strong>– This is the last option. It is usually offered when all else has failed and the patient has pain that disturbs activities of daily living.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
